Prishtina in its sources 1315–1899

Prishtina was first mentioned in 1315, as a roadway. The city must have been founded sometime between 1285 and 1315.

Below we present some of the main historical documents that mention or describe the city of Prishtina up to the 19th century. The material comes from various archives, including Ragusan, Serbian, Ottoman, Venetian, Romanian, and Austrian. Some of the documents belong to Albanian personalities of the time, such as those from the Bogdani family. The list published here is not intended to be exhaustive, as other documents exist and might be included in the future. Those published here are mainly documents previously published in other languages, and which have not yet been translated into Albanian. Yet, some are published here for the first time, in exclusivity. Most of these original documents come from the Archive of Prishtina, Ottoman documents that have been recently brought in their digital format. The rest comprises a mosaic of fragments from various printed books from the time that mention Prishtina, but which have not been translated into Albanian.
