The foundations of the mosque, which (today) is located in front of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo and is popularly known as the Çarshi mosque or the Guri mosque, were laid in June 1389 by Sultan Bayezid I (1389-1402). Its construction continued at the time of Sultan Murat II (1421–1451). While the completion of the works was done at the time of Sultan Mehmet II (1451-1481).
The portal of the foundation of the mosque has not arrived to this day, but there are two inscriptions on the outer wall. In the first inscription it is said:
“Sultan Hydavendigar
first built the cemetery of the sheikhs
Sultan Mehmed II, the Liberator
He completed it together with this mosque.”
Whereas, in the second inscription of the mosque, its restoration and repair in the years 1902-1903 by Sultan Abdylhamit II is noted.
